My first setup with my Angus Mackirk "Sidekick" with #12 mesh concentrates from the Bow River in Calgary. 1,100gph pump with a 1" ball valve 3/4 of the way closed. Need to get a 600gph pump or run a recirculating relief line to take the pressure away. Found nothing in this as I have panned it all previous and only found a SMALL amount of black sand and no gold, flour or otherwise..... Which is exactly what I expected from the bow.... A little concerned about the water pattern on the second riffle, will look in to it.

Naturally, the tiny towns in the woods of Northern Ontario or the southern shore of Newfoundland would be the worst of the worst, but let’s be reasonable. Here are list of towns and cities with a substantial population (at least 5000 residents) that might seem like a decent idea to a prospective immigrant interested in a slower pace of living. Photos Credit to: 1. New Glasgow, Nova Scotia Photo by Verne Equinox, via Wikimedia Commons Photo by JBarta via Wikimedia Commons High crime rate? Check. High unemployment? Check. High cost of living? Check. Limited access to services? Check. High property taxes? Check. Bad weather? Check. Despite being a small, quaint city just a few hours from Halifax, New Glasgow tops polls of the worst places to live in Canada. How could those 10,000 people stand it? They must have all been born there. In 2009 New Glasgow ranked 36th out of 208 in StatsCan's crime severity index. The crime rate increased from 2011 to 2012, and was significantly higher than the provincial average. In 2006, New Glasgow had an unemployment rate of 7.7%. It has decreased since then and, as of the 2011 census, it was 5.7%, or slightly lower than the provincial average. The cost of living in New Glasgow was estimated by one website to be 4% higher than the cost of living in New York City, but only 30.3% of those reporting say their households earn more than $60,000 Canadian per year (after taxes). Property tax in New Glasgow was higher than the average in Nova Scotia and significantly higher than Halifax up to and including 2013. Climate New Glasgow receives 1212 cm of precipitation per year (that's more than Vancouver). 2. Kitchener - Waterloo, Ontario Photo by Tina, via Wikimedia Commons Photo by Tyx via Wikimedia Photo by JustSomePics, via Wikimedia Congratulations, Kitchener / Waterloo, you are the hate crime capital of Canada! Despite hosting two universities and a massive tech company campus, the Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge tri-city area experiences a high per capita rate of verbal and physical assaults on ethnic, religious and gay minorities. Despite its location in the highly diverse Southern Ontario region, Kitchener has inherited the mantle from the previous main offender, Calgary. In 2011 Kitchener-Waterloo was surpassed by Peterborough, Hamilton and Ottawa in police-reported hate crimes, however the rate remained at nearly double the national average. 3. Thetford Mines, Quebec The third of the three rogues’ gallery dwellers is poor Thetford Mines, the heart of Quebec’s asbestos mining region and the winner of the title Most Polluted City in Canada. Despite the overwhelming evidence of the dangerous health effects of asbestos, Canada still mines the dangerous mineral, and the biggest mine in a populated area is in Thetford Mines. 4. Bay Roberts, Newfoundland Photos by Werner Koehler, via Wikimedia Commons Many, many other rural communities on the east coast could make this list, but Bay Roberts appears because it has the highest unemployment rate in Canada, at 17%. Despite the oil, gas, mining and hydro-power booms in Newfoundland, Bay Roberts has somehow managed to avoid the job benefits. This wouldn’t seem so peculiar if Bay Roberts wasn’t just an hour’s drive from money-drunk St. John’s and other rapidly expanding bedroom communities like Conception Bay South. The unemployment rate has improved as it was 20.7% in 2006 5. Sarnia, Ontario Photo by P199, via Wikimedia Sarnia itself may not be so bad, but its view of and proximity to American heavy industry helps to reinforce the fact that this border town is polluted. It also has an empty downtown and a shrinking population. 6. Saint John, New Brunswick Photo by DDD DDD, via Wikimedia Photo by Shipley07, via Wikimedia Photo by Michael d40, via Wikimedia Long known as the unglamourous milltown cousin to its apostrophic neighbour to the east, St. John’s, Saint John is a dirty, stinky pulp and paper port on the Bay of Fundy. Despite the natural beauty nearby, the city has a declining population and few economic opportunities outside of the paper mills, nuclear power plant, and small university satellite campus. Don’t end up in Saint John when you want to live in St. John’s! 7. Nanaimo, BC Photo by Masterhatch, via Wikimedia Photo by galina75, via Wikimedia 8. http://freethinkradio.com/ By Don Hayes Feb.8, 2011 Fluoride was added to Calgarys water supply in 1991, after six attempts since 1957 to get the toxin in our water. The vote was held in 1989 had a 53% of the voters approving the mass medication of Calgarians. There was another public vote held in 1998, in which the voters approved of fluoridation voting 55% in favour. In 1999, the fluoride was reduced from 1ppm to 0.7ppm, in accordance with new Alberta Environment guidelines. In 2009, five of six alderman on the Utilities and Environment committee asked the council to remove the fluoride, in part because of the Massive costs of the $6mil mandatory maintenance that was due at Bearspaw and Glenmore water-treatment plants, and the cost of $750,000 a year to add the toxin. The call was answered, and the council began to look at the issue of water fluoridation. There were many public hearing on the issue, and in late 2010, there was a decision for the councillors to vote if they wanted to have another public vote on the issue for the upcoming 2013 election, to refer the matter to the U of C, or repeal the legislation allowing fluoridation of the water. Just this week it was decided on a 8-3 vote that they were not going to hold a public vote, and it was also decided that they would not refer the matter to an "expert panel" at U of C. Both of these decisions were great, as a public vote would be costly, and the "expert panel" at U of C is completely biased, arguing for water fluoridation. The final decision of the day, was a huge victory, the council voted 10-3 to repeal the legislation allowing calgary to fluoridate its water supply. Now it is not certain when the fluoride will be removed, it may take as long as a year. The city of Calgary has to apply to Alberta Enviroment to change their water licsence. Councilor Gian-Carlo Carra, who voted to end fluoridation, says the science just isn't there to justify water fluoridation "I think the health science view is predicated on a certain approach which I think is no longer entirely relevant. And I encourage health scientists to come forward with a point of view that carries the full view of science but is also more relevant to the sensibilities of the day," Carra said. Elke Babiuk has been advocating to make Calgary's water fluoride free for a long time and she's pleased with council's Tuesday decision. "I feel just as strong about it today as I did in 1988 when I first got involved in the issue and learned that my kids had dental fluorosis because of too much fluoride," she said. I beleive that one of the best arguments against fluoride was the ethics of mass medication. Ald. Jim Stevenson, who voted against fluoridation said "I don't think 53% of the 30% who vote should be able to force a medication on a 100% of the people of the city, It's not the right way to decide mass medication". Ald. Andre Chabot echoed similar words, "It comes down to me, for fluoride, a moral issue — something that touches everyone," "If everyone is not in agreement, it should not be forced on the population." Even if you do beleive that fluoride helps our teeth, no-one should be forced to shower or bath in this water, if one wants fluoridated water they can buy it in bottled water, their is no reason for it to be in the public water supply. Fluoridation is costly, and the money can go to other programs to help prevent tooth decay such as providing poor families with fluoridated water and toothpaste. these programs have been looked at and it was found that it would cost about 1/3 of the cost of fluoridating the water, not including maintenance. Fluoride is not cost effective way of reducing tooth decay. Last year in Waterloo the council voted to remove fluoride, this year Calgary got it done. Now that there are some victories on this issue, it should be easier to convince your councillors about this issue, and push for a hearing on water fluoridation. I really hope that people take advantage of this victory and start a fluoride removal campaign in your city.

Computer science researchers at the University of Calgary, Dr. Reda Alhajj and Gabriela Jurca conducted months of study on correlations between various points of data in prostate cancer research. Today they present their data mining findings, and the results are enlightening. There's a lively discussion afterwards, and promise that this is only the beginning, the goal being that with enough data perhaps these researchers can uncover more about what fuels this disease.
